Multiple users report sudden account restrictions without warning as WhatsApp investigates unusual activity

New Delhi: Thousands of WhatsApp users experienced unexpected disruption on Monday evening after the messaging platform temporarily placed several accounts under review, leaving many unable to send messages, make calls or access normal app functions.

The issue surfaced around 8:00 PM IST, when users from different regions, including India, began sharing screenshots showing their accounts had been flagged for verification. For many, the restriction came without any warning or explanation, raising concerns among individuals who rely on WhatsApp for business and daily communication.

Users reported seeing a notification informing them that their account activity and device information were being reviewed to verify compliance with WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. According to the message displayed on the application, the review process is generally completed within 24 hours.

The sudden restrictions triggered a wave of reactions across social media, with many users claiming they had done nothing unusual. Some said they exclusively use the official version of WhatsApp and had never received any previous policy warnings.

One user described the action as unexpected, saying the account had been disabled despite following the platform’s guidelines, while another expressed concern that business operations had come to a standstill because WhatsApp is the primary mode of communication with clients.

Responding to the reports, WhatsApp acknowledged that its automated safety systems are designed to identify suspicious activity and prevent misuse of the platform. The company, however, admitted that legitimate users may occasionally be affected during the process.

In a statement, the company said it continuously works to detect abuse and remove accounts that violate its policies, but added that if an account is mistakenly flagged, it is restored as quickly as possible after verification.

During the review period, affected users can still see their locally stored chats, but messaging and several other WhatsApp services remain unavailable until the verification process is completed.

Although WhatsApp has not disclosed the exact reason behind the sudden spike in account reviews, the incident has once again highlighted the challenges of automated moderation systems, where genuine users may sometimes become unintended casualties while platforms attempt to curb spam, scams and fraudulent activity.

The company has advised users to wait for the review process to conclude before taking further action. If the account is found to comply with WhatsApp’s policies, access is expected to be restored automatically.
