After Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, there were speculations about the meeting between the US President and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sources say that Trump and Modi may meet on February 13.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington DC on February 13, with Trump expected to host a dinner for the Indian leader during the visit, sources said. PM Modi will remain in the US capital until February 14. The visit will include engagements with American corporate leaders and the Indian diaspora.
Following their first call since Trump’s inauguration, the US President revealed to reporters that PM Modi’s White House visit was likely in February. The NDA government is keen on fostering early engagement, leveraging the strong personal rapport between PM Modi and Trump to strengthen collaboration and avoid potential tensions from affecting their relationship.
During the call, the White House emphasised that Trump highlighted the importance of India purchasing more US-made security equipment and advancing towards a more equitable trade relationship. Given the context of Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, trade discussions have taken center stage.
Sources familiar with the administration’s strategy indicated that Trump is committed to reducing the US’s trade deficit with India, pushing for aggressive advocacy of American commercial interests. India has already indicated a willingness to purchase more US energy products, and its recent budget included customs duty cuts that benefit US businesses. Additionally, India’s move to amend its nuclear liability laws opens the door for enhanced commercial nuclear cooperation with the US.
Trump also raised the issue of illegal immigration, stating that Modi would “do the right thing”. India has committed to taking back Indians who illegally entered the US, following proper identification.
