Shashi Tharoor: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that in reality there is no such thing as BJP’s foreign policy or Congress’s foreign policy, there is only Indian foreign policy and Indian national interest.
Shashi Tharoor on PM Modi: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday June 24, 2025 said that his article on the global reach of Operation Sindoor is not a sign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi joining the party. He said that it is a message of national unity, interest and standing up for India.
Shashi Tharoor had praised PM Modi
Congress MP Tharoor had said in an article written for the English daily The Hindu on Monday June 21 , 2025 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s energy, his multifaceted personality and readiness to communicate remain an important asset for India on the global stage, but it needs more cooperation and support. His comments were seen as creating an uncomfortable situation for the Congress party again and a possibility of a rift in his relationship with the party leadership.
Answered the question of joining BJP
When asked about the article at an event, the MP from Thiruvananthapuram said, “This is not an indication of me joining Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party (BJP), as some people are unfortunately saying. It is a statement to stand up for national unity, national interest and India, which I think is basically the reason why I came back to India after serving 25 years in the United Nations.”
Congress MP Tharoor said, “I did this to serve India and I am very proud to have had the opportunity to do so.” The Congress leader said that this article was written about Operation Sindoor, in which he described the success of the diplomatic contact campaign.
What did Shashi Tharoor say about his article?
Shashi Tharoor said, “People always see all these things in the context of today’s news. This is an article in which I have described the success of this outreach campaign, which, among other things, has demonstrated the unity of all parties on a matter of vital national interest. That is why I said that the Prime Minister has demonstrated a multi-faceted personality and energy in his interactions with other countries. He has visited more countries than previous Prime Ministers and he has done so to take India’s message across the world.”
‘United India is a message against terrorism’
He said, “In my view, we all supported his efforts to use the power of India’s different political parties, backgrounds, groups, religions and send a message to the world about what a united India stands for. Today it is a message against terrorism, tomorrow it may be a message on some other subject, but I believe it is very important to support it.”
Tharoor also said, “I have long been of the opinion that in our democracy, political differences should stop at the borders. For us, I feel that there is really no such thing as BJP’s foreign policy or Congress’s foreign policy, there is only Indian foreign policy and Indian national interest.”
He said, “I am not saying anything new. I said this many years ago and I said this publicly, on record, for the first time when I became the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in 2014.”
Operation Sindoor was a moment of national resolve
Tharoor said in his article that the diplomatic contact campaign conducted after Operation Sindoor was a moment of national resolve and effective communication. The Prime Minister’s Office shared this article of Tharoor on the social media platform ‘X’.
Tharoor, who headed the multi-party delegation that went to the US and four other countries to convey India’s stand after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor military operation, said, “The diplomatic contact after Operation Sindoor was a moment of national resolve and effective communication. It has confirmed that when India stands united, it can raise its voice with clarity and conviction at international forums.” Tharoor’s praise for the Prime Minister comes at a time when the Congress has been continuously attacking the Modi government over foreign policy and alleging that Indian diplomacy has collapsed and the country has become isolated globally.
