Sergey Lavrov on RIC Troika Format: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday May 29, 2025 that Moscow is interested in resuming activities under the Russia-India-China (RIC) format.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was addressing an international social and political conference held in Perm, a city nestled between the Ural Mountains. The conference was organized to create a single and equitable system for security and cooperation in Eurasia. The city of Perm, nestled between the Ural Mountains, is located at the place where Europe’s border meets Asia.
What did the Russian Foreign Minister say about the RIC Troika format
According to TASS, the Russian Foreign Minister said, “I want to confirm that we are interested in reactivating the Troika Russia-India-China format as soon as possible. It was established many years ago on the initiative of former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov. Since the establishment of this format, more than 20 ministerial level meetings have been held so far. These meetings were not only held at the level of heads of foreign policy, but meetings were held at the level of heads of economic, trade and financial agencies of the three countries.” He said, “As I understand it, as of today, an agreement has been reached between India and China to calm the situation on the border and I think now the time has come to reactivate this RIC Troika.”
Russian Foreign Minister accused NATO
Apart from this, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also accused NATO. He said that today NATO is openly trying to involve India in conspiracies against China.
He said, “I am saying this on the basis of confidential talks with India that I have no doubt that our Indian friends and we are clearly seeing this trend from Russia, which can really be called a major act of provocation.”
RIC Troika postponed after Galwan military dispute
It is worth mentioning that the RIC Troika has been postponed since the military dispute between India and China in the Galwan Valley in the year 2020. However, during the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia in October 2024, both the leaders expressed the need to improve bilateral relations between the two countries.
