Year Ender 2024: The year 2024 is about to end, this year was special in many ways. Especially politically, this year will be remembered as a surprising year. The election results of this year surprised even the political analysts. Let us know what the mandate of this year said…
Lok Sabha results shocked NDA
This year the 18th Lok Sabha elections were held. Before the elections, it was being claimed that there was a wave of BJP in the country and BJP itself was also full of confidence. This can be gauged from the fact that before the elections, BJP gave the slogan ‘This time cross 400’. Various political pundits also believed that BJP can win record seats and the figure of NDA under the leadership of BJP can cross 400. However, when the results came, everyone was surprised. BJP could not even touch the majority figure and was reduced to just 240 seats. However, with the help of TDP and JDU and other allies, BJP was successful in capturing power at the Center for the third time.
The opposition was successful in creating a narrative about the Constitution
After the results of the general elections, it was claimed that the popularity of the Prime Minister has declined. However, the results of the assembly elections held after the Lok Sabha elections have made it clear that the popularity of Prime Minister Modi is still intact and he is still the most accepted leader of the country. During the general elections, the opposition alliance alleged that if the BJP gets a bumper majority, they will change the Constitution. The opposition was successful in creating such a narrative about the Constitution in the election campaign and this was the reason that even after revolutionary decisions like removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, BJP could not touch the majority figure on its own. The Hindi belt of the country is considered to be a strong stronghold of the BJP, but surprisingly, the BJP suffered the biggest setback in Uttar Pradesh, the most important state of the Hindi belt. In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP could win only 33 seats, whereas in the 2019 general elections, the BJP had won 62 out of 80 seats in UP.

Return of coalition politics
Coalition politics has a long history in the country, but after the landslide victory of BJP in the 2014 and 2019 general elections, it was believed that coalition politics has bid farewell to the country and people now prefer to give a decisive mandate to any party. In the 2024 elections too, it was expected that the public would give a clear majority, but the election results shattered all hopes and revived coalition politics again. BJP, which got a bumper mandate in the last two terms, is dependent on its alliance partners this time. At the same time, the opposition is also trying to corner the government by forming an alliance.
Naveen Patnaik’s 20-year rule in Odisha ends
Along with the Lok Sabha elections, assembly elections were also held in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The results of the Odisha elections were also special and Naveen Patnaik’s party, which was in power in the state for the last 24 years, had to face defeat. In Odisha, the BJP emerged as the largest party and the party won 78 out of 147 assembly seats in the state. Naveen Patnaik’s BJD could win only 51 seats. TDP was also expected to win in Andhra Pradesh, but when the results came, everyone was surprised because YSRCP was almost wiped out in the elections.
Haryana made Congress cry
This year, assembly elections were held in Haryana too, the results of which proved all political pundits wrong. BJP, which has been in power in Haryana for the last 10 years, was being predicted to lose this time due to anti-incumbency wave and farmers’ protest. At the same time, claims were being made of Congress’ victory under the leadership of Bhupendra Singh Hooda, but the election results surprised everyone and made BJP the winner. Nayab Singh Saini became the Chief Minister of the state.
The magic of ‘Ek Hain Toh Safe Hain’ worked in Maharashtra
The recent results of the Maharashtra Assembly elections in November, keeping up the trend of election results throughout the year, proved that our country’s democracy is very strong and it is not that easy to predict it. In the Maharashtra elections, the Mahayuti alliance of Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, led by the BJP, won a landslide victory. On the other hand, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar’s Shiv Sena, who were hoping for public sympathy, had to face a bad defeat. Both the parties had performed well in the Lok Sabha elections and the leadership of these parties, encouraged by that performance, had claimed victory in the assembly elections, but the election results turned the tables. The condition of the Congress was also bad this time as well, like the last election. Devendra Fadnavis has become the new CM of the state.
Apart from these, after the decision to remove Article 370 in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, the BJP was expecting a majority, but it could not be fulfilled. At the same time, the BJP also got a setback in Jharkhand and Hemant Soren’s government returned to power. Surprising results were seen in the by-elections on many seats. Especially in UP, SP which won 37 seats in the Lok Sabha elections had to be satisfied with just two seats in the by-elections held recently on seven seats.
