Bhagalpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with a Makhana (fox nuts) garland during his visit to Bhagalpur, Bihar on Monday. He visited the state to release the 19th instalment of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN).
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi stated that Makhana is a superfood, revealing that he consumes it almost daily. He said, “Now, makhana has become a staple part of breakfast in cities across the country. Speaking personally, I eat makhana at least 300 out of 365 days a year. It is a superfood that we must now take to global markets. That’s why, in this year’s budget, the government has announced the formation of a Makhana Board for the benefit of makhana farmers.”
Why Is Makhana Important To Bihar?
Bihar is the India’s largest producer of makhana. It has gained political attention following its mention in the Budget session this year, ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed the creation of a Makhana Board in Bihar, stating, “Makhana Board will be established in Bihar to improve production and processing of fox nut.”
