Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday, 5 November 2026, dismissed reports that he was considering leaving President Donald Trump’s administration. In an interview with The New York Times, Rubio said serving through the end of Trump’s second term had “always been my plan”.

Rubio’s response came after Bloomberg News reported that he had discussed stepping down with White House officials, who asked him to stay. A separate report by The Independent said he was preparing to seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. The State Department disputed both accounts.

Rubio Declines to Discuss 2028

“I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” Rubio told The New York Times. Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser, has been mentioned as a potential Republican presidential contender. He has previously said he would support Vice-President JD Vance if Vance ran.

The speculation followed Republican setbacks in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Days before the vote, Rubio had joined Trump at a campaign rally in Salina, Kansas, where he briefly addressed the crowd. His interview addressed his plans for the remainder of Trump’s term, while leaving his own plans for 2028 open.
