What is Balkanization Balkanization is a political term that is used when a country is divided into many small pieces. This division can be on the basis of language, colour, customs or ideology. These are those parts that remain hostile towards each other even after the division and keep creating instability in each other’s region.
The term originated in the Balkan region, where the collapse of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th and 20th centuries left the peninsula divided into many small countries and led to political conflict and tension between them, beginning shortly before World War I.
The Balkan region is a part of South-Eastern Europe. It is also called a peninsula because it is surrounded by water on three sides. It includes countries like Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, North Macedonia, Bosnia, Serbia and Romania. It was ruled by the Ottoman Empire for a long time, but from 1817 to 1912, there were many conflicts and disputes, due to which it got divided into many small countries. All of them were hostile towards each other on the basis of language or culture.
