Russia Offers R-37M Missile To India: Many deals have been done between India and Russia to develop the defense sector, be it S-400 or Brahmos missile.

Russia Offer To India: Amid the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan, Russia has reportedly offered India the R-37M missile. This offer is to equip the fleet of Su-30MKI fighter jets with this missile. The R-37M is a hypersonic long second air-to-air missile.

Known as the AA-13 Axeed, the R-37M has a range of 300 to 400 kilometers and a maximum speed of Mach 6, making it one of the world’s most dangerous beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles. Meaning that it has the ability to attack the enemy’s target in the air without tracking it. This offer becomes more important when India wants to further increase its air power amid regional tensions with its enemies Pakistan and China.

What is the specialty of the R-37M missile?

  1. The missile has been developed by Russia’s Vympel Design Bureau and is designed to neutralise high-value aerial targets such as Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), tanker aircraft and enemy fighter jets.
  2. Its jettisonable rocket booster enables the missile to achieve an extended range of 300-400 km (160-220 nautical miles), much ahead of India’s current R-77 missiles which have a range of around 100 km.
  3. The missile’s hypersonic speed of up to Mach 6 (around 7,400 km/h) enables it to strike fast-moving targets, making it difficult for enemies to evade.
  4. The missile weighs around 510 kg and is equipped with a sophisticated guidance system that combines mid-course updates, active radar homing and navigation for terminal phase.
  5. The R-37M can be fitted on several fighter jets, including the Su-30, Su-35, Su-57, MiG-31BM and MiG-35. Russia has offered it to India for its Su-30MKI fighter jets, which are to be upgraded.
