Dubai: The United Arab Emirates has launched a formal investigation into the dramatic cockpit attack aboard a flydubai flight bound for Israel, with prosecutors examining whether the incident had any connection to terrorist activity or was planned in advance.

The incident occurred aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 . The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia after a violent confrontation inside the flight deck in which Indian captain Smit Machchhar was stabbed, according to reports and Israeli officials.

Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar managed to release the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew members to enter and overpower the alleged attacker. Reserve crew members travelling aboard the aircraft subsequently helped bring the plane safely down at Tabuk.

The aircraft was carrying 174 people, according to subsequent accounts of the incident. Flight-tracking data showed the jet losing a substantial amount of altitude during the emergency before control was restored.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Attorney-General Dr Hamad Al Shamsi had ordered the formation of a specialised Public Prosecution team to investigate the circumstances and causes of the incident.

The investigation will examine “all circumstances and motives surrounding the incident”, including a possible connection to terrorist activity or intent and whether there was prior planning or direction, the ministry said.AE also thanked Saudi authorities for their handling of the emergency and cooperation following the diversion.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised Machchhar and the passengers who intervened. Israeli officials have described the episode as a possible terrorist attack, but the motive has not yet been conclusively established by investigators. UAE authorities have specifically cautioned against speculation until the investigation is completed.

The alleged attacker has been described by Israeli officials as an Omani national. Saudi authorities took him into custody after the aircraft landed. s

Machchhar’s actions have meanwhile drawn praise in India. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar have commended the Indian captain’s courage and presence of mind during the emergency.

The extraordinary episode is also likely to put renewed attention on cockpit security, crew screening and procedures for responding when a threat originates inside the flight deck.

For now, UAE authorities have stressed that the investigation remains under way and that conclusions about the attack’s motive should await its findings.
