Sukma: Government welfare support is making its way to families in some of Chhattisgarh’s remote areas, providing timely assistance to women during pregnancy and after childbirth. In Sukma, the Pradhan Mantri Matri Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) has helped Sheela Karma meet essential expenses while also allowing her to save a part of the assistance for her newborn’s future.

A resident of Devi Chowk under Sukma Nagar Palika Parishad, Karma received ₹5,000 directly in her bank account under the scheme. The financial assistance helped her purchase nutritious food, medicines and other necessities during pregnancy and following the birth of her child.

Financial Support When It Matters Most

For Karma and her family, the assistance was not limited to meeting immediate needs. After taking care of essential expenses, she kept the remaining amount in her bank account as savings for her newborn.

The direct transfer of funds also meant that she could access the benefit without depending on intermediaries, an important aspect of welfare delivery for beneficiaries living in remote regions.

Recalling how the assistance helped her family during an important period, Karma said, “The scheme stood by me like a family member during a difficult time.”

The Pradhan Mantri Matri Vandana Yojana provides maternity benefits to eligible pregnant and lactating women through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The programme is intended to support maternal well-being and provide financial assistance during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Karma’s experience in Sukma illustrates how timely financial support can have an impact beyond immediate household expenditure. For a mother preparing for the arrival of a child, assistance with nutrition and medicines can ease some of the financial pressure, while even a modest amount set aside can contribute towards future needs.
