Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met at the G-7 summit after a gap of 16 months on Tuesday June 16, 2026 . Heads of state from various nations have arrived in the French city of Biarritz to attend the G-7 meeting, and it was here that the two leaders met.
French city of Biarritz( France): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met at the G-7 summit. This meeting took place after 16 months. The two leaders met in the French city of Biarritz, where they had arrived to participate in the G-7 summit.
The meeting occurred while Trump was seated in the meeting hall, awaiting the start of the G-7 proceedings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the venue, and the two leaders conversed for approximately 50 seconds.
This brief encounter was quite cordial; the leaders greeted each other with smiles before the summit proceedings began. The meeting took place as leaders from around the world gathered for the summit hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Before the leaders began discussions on key global issues, Macron welcomed PM Modi at the summit venue.
It is worth mentioning that India had reacted sharply after three Indians were killed in an incident involving the US Navy near the Strait of Hormuz. However, the US did not make any significant statement regarding the matter; instead, Senator Marco Rubio remarked that nations passing through the Strait of Hormuz should comply with US Navy orders.
Following this incident, relations between the two countries had soured temporarily. External Affairs Minister Jaishankar had conveyed India’s strong objection to Rubio.
Subsequently, this meeting took place between the two heads of state. A formal meeting between Trump and PM Modi is scheduled for Wednesday evening at 6:15 PM.
Key diplomatic activities during the summit
Prime Minister Modi has arrived in Biarritz for a two-day visit to attend the summit. This marks Prime Minister Modi’s seventh consecutive appearance at the G7 summit.
Prime Minister Modi’s schedule during the summit is packed with high-level diplomatic engagements. He will hold several bilateral meetings, including discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
These meetings are expected to focus on strengthening ties and discussing key regional and global issues. In the evening, he will join other world leaders at a gala dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Although India is not a member of the G7, the group’s member nations—comprising the world’s developed economies—regularly invite India to this forum.
New Delhi uses this platform to highlight the concerns of the ‘Global South’ and raise issues that impact developing nations.
