Kolkata: Sanjay Roy found guilty in rape-murder of female doctor, sentence to be announced on January 20

Kolkata RG Kar Rape and Murder Case: Sealdah District and Sessions Court has convicted Sanjay Roy for raping and murdering a female trainee doctor of RG Kar. On August 9 last year, the body of the female trainee doctor was found half naked in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital. Kolkata Police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy on the basis of CCTV footage and evidence found from the crime scene.

The Sessions Court of Sealdah, Kolkata has convicted Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. Judge Anirban Das convicted Sanjay Roy under sections 64 (punishment for rape), 66 (punishment for causing death) and 103 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS). Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah Court pronounced the verdict 57 days after the trial began. While convicting Sanjay Roy, the judge said in his comment, ‘You must be punished.’

Sanjay asked the judge, ‘Why are other people who implicated me being released?’ In response to this, Judge Anirban Das said, ‘I have closely examined all the evidence and heard the witnesses, also heard the arguments during the trial. After going through all this, I have found you guilty. You are guilty. You must be punished.’ The court will announce Sanjay Roy’s sentence on January 20. He has been sent to judicial custody till then. The case sparked nationwide outrage and a long protest in Kolkata, mainly involving doctors and medical staff.

On August 9 last year, the body of a female trainee doctor was found half-naked in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital. Kolkata Police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy on the basis of CCTV footage and evidence from the crime scene. On the orders of the Kolkata High Court, the CBI took over the case and started the investigation. The central investigating agency also considered Sanjay Roy as the main accused in its charge sheet and demanded death penalty for him from the court.
