The fear of the infection spreading in China since mid-December increased further when cases of HMPV were confirmed in India. Meanwhile, doctors and experts say that Human Metapneumovirus is not a new virus, but its existence is believed to be in the world for about 60 years. Despite this, due to the spread of HMPV first in China, then India and now in some other countries, there is concern about its infection rate. Not only this, similar infection was recorded in those infected with Human Metapneumovirus as in those affected by coronavirus. Due to this, the effects of HMPV are also being compared to Covid-19, which spread to many countries of the world after emerging in China itself.

Where have cases related to this virus been found in the world?

  1. China– The first reports of the spread of human metapneumovirus came from China. Can Biao, director of China’s Institute of Infectious Diseases, said that HMPV infection is spreading rapidly among children under 14 years of age. However, he did not give any data related to this. No official website or news portal of China is also tracking HMPV cases. Biao has only given this information that while infections caused by other viruses have decreased, there has been a jump in HMPV cases.

According to some reports, the northern part of China is most affected by this virus. At the same time, a government website related to Vietnam has tried to show the current situation by mentioning the situation of China’s ‘Ho Chi Minh’ city last year. According to this, from December 2023 to March 2024, 16,000 to 18,000 cases of human metapneumovirus were reported every month in China.

Presenting the 2023 data of the same city, the website said that then 15 percent of the cases of respiratory diseases were due to the HMPV virus.

2-Malaysia-On the other hand, some cases of human metapneumovirus have also been found in the East Asian country Malaysia. In 2024, 327 cases of HMPV were registered in this country, which is 45 percent more than the total 225 cases found in 2023.

For this, 8360 tests have also been done, in which 30 people were found infected with HMPV. According to the ministry, the strain of HMPV has been identified. Apart from HMPV in the country, the highest number of 680 cases were seen related to rhinovirus. Apart from this, 206 cases of coronavirus were registered. 226 cases of adenovirus and 178 cases of parainfluenza have been recorded in Kazakhstan.

He is undergoing treatment at Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki. At present, the infected person has been admitted to the ICU. The report said that this person went to China during Christmas and after returning, he showed flu-related symptoms. Not only this, flu-related symptoms have also been seen in his wife and daughter. However, their infection with HMPV has not been confirmed yet.
