PM Carney is being criticized in Canada for inviting PM Modi

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called PM Modi and invited him to G7. The Canadian government’s decision is being criticized for the same reasons . The reason is that the opposition parties of Canada have raised questions on inviting Prime Minister Modi in 2023 over India’s alleged role in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Prime Minister Modi accepted the invitation to attend the G7 summit during a phone conversation with Carney on Friday. This summit will be held in the Canadian province of Alberta between June 15 and 17. Canada is the chair of the G7 group this year.

Meanwhile, when Canadian journalists asked questions about inviting PM Modi amid allegations against the Indian government, Canadian PM Carney said that India is the fifth largest economy in the world and its role is central in many important global supply chains. That is why he has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 summit and it is necessary that countries like India also become a part of these high-level global discussions

When journalists questioned Carney on the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, he refused to comment, saying that the matter is in the legal process and it would not be appropriate to comment on it.

Emphasis on India’s central role

Prime Minister Carney made it clear that considering India’s role in global supply chains, it is a wise step to include it in forums like G7. Carney also said that he had discussed with other G7 member countries before inviting Modi and this decision was taken only after consensus.

Signs of improvement in India-Canada bilateral relations

Mark Carney also said that India and Canada have agreed to continue mutual law enforcement dialogue. Describing it as a sign of progress in bilateral relations, he said, “We have now agreed bilaterally that the law enforcement dialogue will be continued. There has been some progress in this and the issues of accountability have also been accepted.”

Political opposition and criticism

Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) has reacted sharply to Carney’s invitation to Modi. The party said, “This decision is extremely worrying.” At the same time, opposition critics believe that it was not appropriate to invite Prime Minister Modi as long as the investigation into allegations of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s murder is ongoing.

Background of India-Canada relations

Let us tell you that in 2023, relations between the two countries soured after then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India recalled its High Commissioner and five other diplomats from Canada and expelled some Canadian diplomats from the country. India at that time accused the Trudeau government of allowing Khalistani elements to remain active from Canadian soil.

However, after the victory of Liberal Party leader Mark Carney in the parliamentary elections held in April, there is hope of rebuilding relations between the two countries. In recent months, dialogue between Indian and Canadian security officials has resumed and both countries are also considering the appointment of new High Commissioners. After Trudeau’s ouster, India had hoped that the relations between the two countries could be strengthened again on the basis of mutual trust and sensitivity.
