Shashi Tharoor Slams China-Pakistan: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has strongly criticised China for supporting Pakistan in preventing the mention of terrorist organisations in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Tharoor is currently on a visit to Brazil with an all-party diplomatic delegation.
Criticising Beijing’s role in protecting the Lashkar-e-Taiba-backed ‘Resistance Front’ in the United Nations, he said, “We have been sending reports about this group to the UN Sanctions Committee from time to time. Even when we requested our colleagues in the Security Council to add the name of this organisation in the press statement, China opposed it at the behest of Pakistan.”
Targeted China
He further said, “I am saddened that Pakistan removed the name of the terrorist organisation with the support of China, due to which there was no mention of it in the statement. Today both you and I are not members of the Security Council. This situation should change. We should be together in the Council.”
Tharoor made this statement during a discussion with Brazil’s former foreign minister and former Brazilian ambassador to the United Nations Celso Amorim. He said that due to geopolitical alliances, India faces difficulties in fighting terrorism at the international level.
Demand raised for reform in the Security Council
Shashi Tharoor stressed the need for comprehensive reform in the United Nations Security Council and advocated for more inclusive global representation. He said, “Big and democratic countries like India and Brazil are not part of the council, this situation should change.”
At present, the Indian delegation led by Shashi Tharoor is in Brazil and will go to America from there. The delegation was welcomed at Brasilia airport by Indian Embassy Charge d’Affaires Sandeep Kumar Kujur.
Also expressed concern over the Colorado terror attack
Shashi Tharoor also reacted to the recent terror attack in Colorado. He said that Indian MPs were worried after getting information about this attack, but it was a matter of relief that no one lost their life. Tharoor said in a post on the social media platform X, “We agree with the statement of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that there should be no place for terrorism in our countries.” The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has named 45-year-old Mohammed Sabry Soliman as the accused in this attack. This attack took place on Sunday June 1, 2025 in Boulder, Colorado, where Israeli supporters were targeted. In this incident, six people aged between 67 and 88 were injured, who were taken to the hospital for treatment.
