Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand: On the second day of Republic Day, Uttarakhand is preparing to create a new history. From today on Monday January 27, 2025 the rules of Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Uttarakhand. Let us tell you that Goa is the only state in India where UCC is applicable. After independence, now Uttarakhand will become the first state to implement UCC. The UCC portal will be unveiled at 12:30 pm today at the State Secretariat. CM Pushkar Singh Dhami will unveil the UCC portal today just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.
What is Uniform Civil Code
Uniform Civil Code means one country and one law. In any country where Uniform Civil Code is implemented, whatever laws are made in that country regarding marriage, divorce, child adoption, property division and all other subjects, all the citizens of all religions have to follow them equally. Today, after the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand, its rules will be applicable to all the people living in the state. This law will also be applicable to the people of Uttarakhand living outside the state. Let us tell you that the discussion of implementing UCC in India has been going on for a long time. At present, many private laws in India are decided on the basis of religion. In such a situation, if Uniform Civil Code is implemented in India in the coming time, then the same law will be applicable for all religions in the country which will be decided by the Indian Parliament.
Why is UCC already implemented in Goa
At present, Goa is the only state in India where UCC is applicable. In fact, Goa has been given the status of a special state in the Indian Constitution. Also, the Parliament had made a law and given Goa the right to implement the Portuguese Civil Code. This is the reason why UCC is already applicable in Goa in India. It is also known as Goa Civil Code. Under the rules of UCC in Goa, there is only one family law for all religions and castes including Hindus, Muslims and Christians. After the implementation of UCC today, Uttarakhand will become the first state to implement UCC after independence.
Under this law, no one can give triple talaq in Goa. Without registration, the marriage will not be legally valid. After the marriage is registered, divorce can only be done through the court. Husband and wife have equal rights on property. Apart from this, parents will have to make their children the owner of at least half the property, which also includes daughters. In Goa, Muslims do not have the right to marry 4 times, while Hindus are allowed to marry twice with certain conditions.
UCC was one of the promises of BJP in the assembly elections
During the assembly elections held in Uttarakhand in 2022, one of the main promises of BJP was to implement UCC in the state. This is the reason that as soon as he took over the post of CM again in March, CM Dhami approved the UCC proposal in the very first cabinet meeting and approved the formation of an expert committee to prepare its draft. The expert committee submitted it to the state government on 2 February 2024. Based on the report, the UCC Bill was passed in the special session of the Assembly on 7 February 2024 and a month later, on 12 March 2024, the President also approved it. Now today on 27 January 2025, UCC will be implemented in the entire state.
