TRAI New Rule: OTP will not come on phones from December 1! Jio-Airtel-VI-BSNL users should know this new rule
New Rule 1 December 2024: Airtel, Jio, VI and BSNL SIM card holders may face problems from December 1. Users may stop getting OTP from December 1. These rules can now be implemented from December 1. The new rules will help avoid cyber fraud, but the correct OTP messages will also be filtered. Smartphones and the Internet have made life easier, but cyber fraud and online scams have also increased. Keeping this in mind, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently taken several important steps to protect people from these dangers.
TRAI has ordered telecom companies to implement traceability of commercial messages and one-time passwords (OTP). This decision was announced in the month of August. Earlier the companies had to implement it by October 31 , 2024 but on the demand of Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea (VI) and BSNL, it was extended to 31 November.
Will the rules be implemented from December 1?
When these new rules come into effect from December 1, OTP messages may take some time. Users may have to wait longer for OTP in services like banking and ticket booking. This step has been taken because scammers use fake OTP messages to access people’s devices, causing money to be lost.
New rules for 5G infrastructure
To rapidly develop 5G networks in the country from January 1, 2025, the government has issued a new guideline called the Telecom Act (RoW), called Right of Way (RoW). This law will set standardized charges for telecom infrastructure in all states. The RoW rules will make it easier to set up infrastructure and promote telecom network expansion across the country, as states charge differently for it.
TRAI took this decision because of these reasons
TRAI aims to protect consumers more effectively as scammers often use fake OTP messages to gain access to individuals’ devices, resulting in massive financial losses. Therefore, TRAI has decided to implement this rule in all telecom companies.
What is TRAI’s new rule?
TRAI has directed all telecom companies to track all commercial messages and OTP using the traceability system. Implementation of this system will reduce the cases of sending fake OTP. This rule was to come into effect in August, but its dates have been changed due to many reasons.
Why can there be a delay in getting OTP?
This rule was earlier going to come into effect on October 31, 2024 but TRAI extended it to November 31, 2024 on the demand of Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL. This may delay the arrival of OTP in the initial days as telecom companies may take time to fully implement this new system.
OTP will take time to come
If Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL implement the traceability rules from December 1, then it may take time for OTP messages to come. In such a situation, if you work in a bank or reservation, it may take time for you to get OTP.
Why is this rule necessary?
This system will help prevent cases of fraud through fake OTP. This will give consumers more confidence in the validity of OTP. This will help telecom companies to better control communications on their network.
