As the first Indian to reach the International Space Station, Group Captain Shukla’s achievement is remarkable. It is a testament to his courage, determination and dedication. The successful launch of the spacecraft for the Axiom-4 mission is a proud and historic moment for the entire country.

Nidhi Mishra, sister of AF Group Captain and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, said, “The experience was good. So far all the phases have been completed successfully. I wish that the future missions are also completed successfully…”
Union Minister Jitendra Singh said, “This is a big leap. After 40 years an Indian astronaut has gone to space, but there is a lot of difference between the 1984 mission in which Rakesh Sharma went… The difference between then and now is that at that time our space program was in its infancy. India did not have much to offer and neither was much expected from it; neither did we expect much to get… But today, India is an equal partner. It is not only collaborating in scientific experiments but also playing a leading role… They have been assigned to carry out various experiments, which are broadly classified into 7 categories… All these experiments are going to benefit space exploration programs not only in India but across the world. So, India has now taken the lead… This is a sign of India moving towards a developed India.”
On Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla becoming the first Indian to go to the International Space Station, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said, ‘I am proud and more than that we are proud that they offered to send one of the Indians to space. When this mission was being planned, it was about 2-3 years ago, when PM Modi was on a visit to DC. Then the proposal came that such a mission is being planned and they would like to include one of the Indians in it. Incidentally we had four Air Force officers who were already training for Gaganyaan. Shubhanshu is the youngest among those four. So one of them had to be chosen. Finally Shubhanshu’s name was chosen and Nair (Group Captain Prashant Nair) was the standby. The Americans were equally keen to send an Indian to space. In other words it means that today more than ever before they understand the importance of India’s potential, India’s talent and India’s ability to contribute.’
‘This is a very emotional moment, I have no words’
Shuchi Mishra, sister of IAF Group Captain and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, said, “This was a very emotional moment, I have no words. We are very happy that the first stage has passed well but this is just the beginning, a lot is still left.”

Being much more than a mission, it is a reaffirmation of India’s ever-expanding horizons.’

It’s an amazing journey’
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla said, “Namaste, my dear countrymen! What a journey! We are back in space once again after 41 years. It’s an amazing journey. We are orbiting the Earth at a speed of 7.5 kilometres per second. The tricolour embossed on my shoulders tells me that I am with all of you. This journey of mine is not the start of the International Space Station (ISS), but the start of India’s human space programme. I want all of you to be a part of this journey. Your chest should also swell with pride… Come, let us all together start India’s human space programme. Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!”
