What is Digital Address System? Why is the government working on this scheme now? What is this Digipin, which has been launched recently? How will it work and what will be its benefits? Let’s know…
When the central government introduced a digital identity (ID) for Indians in 2009 – Aadhaar, its purpose was to give every person in the country a unique identity that could be accessed anytime and from anywhere. Similarly, when the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) was introduced for digital payments in the country, every person was provided a unique digital ID for their banking needs, through which people can not only exchange money easily, but can also manage their different expenses.
Now in this episode, the government is going to introduce a new system, called Digital Address System. Through this, the government is now planning to give a digital identity to the structures present at different places in the country. Actually, digital infrastructure has grown rapidly in India, although the data of different areas is still not completely available at the digital level. In such a situation, the government now wants to put different locations in India on a digital map. Many other objectives can be achieved through this.
In such a situation, it is important to know what is this digital address system? Why is the government working on this scheme now? What is this Digipin, which has been launched recently? When has the government made such attempts before? Let’s know…
First know – what is the scheme?
The way the Center has strengthened the personal identification system through Aadhaar, in a similar way the government now wants to give a different identity to different addresses. This entire scheme will be a part of India’s ‘Digital Public Infrastructure’ (DPI) database.
At present, the government does not have any system to keep accurate information of any house or any building (residential-industrial) or any address in the country. The effect of this is that many private companies obtain information related to people’s addresses and share them privately or publicly without the permission of those living or owning that address.

To stop all these things, the government is preparing to create a system in which the complete information of an address is present in a government database. This entire database will be like Aadhaar or UPI, but it will be based on the address rather than the person. All the information related to that address will be present in the Digital Address System or DAS. Also, the data of this address will be more secure and it cannot be shared without the permission of the owner of that address.
On the other hand, the existing database related to addresses in India is not integrated. That is, the government does not have complete information of every address at the digital level. This also includes important things like location. In such a situation, to reach an address, other things are also needed along with the location details, such as famous or popular places nearby. Due to this problem, many services are not able to reach the addresses on time and in the right manner.
According to a report by Economic Times, some research has revealed that providing incorrect or incomplete address information causes loss to India’s economy in the service sector. This loss is 10-14 billion dollars per year, which is 0.5 percent of India’s gross domestic product (GDP). In such a situation, the government is now preparing to start a digital address system to overcome these shortcomings.
How will the digital address system work?
The central government has come up with a digital address framework to prevent losses to the economy due to the lack of a database of consolidated address information.
Through this system, the farthest places in India will be able to get a fixed standard address, that too with the correct location. Later, preparations are being made to link the digital address system with people’s Aadhaar and UPI, so that along with the identity of the users, their financial status and their address can be linked together and government and private services can be delivered to them properly.
