Kopra Reservoir Set to Receive the Status of Ramsar Site

State Wetland Authority Submits Proposal to Centre
Raipur To strengthen ecological conservation measures in Chhattisgarh, the State Government has moved a proposal to designate Kopra Reservoir in Bilaspur district as a Ramsar Site on Friday November 21, 2025. Acting on the directions of Forest and Climate Change Minister Kedar Kashyap, the initiative positions this vital water body — known for its unique blend of natural and human-made features — for national and international recognition. The reservoir has long served as a lifeline for the region, supporting irrigation, water security, and a rich web of biodiversity.
Ramsar Status To Elevate the Region’s Profile Globally
Forest Minister Kashyap expressed confidence that the declaration of Kopra Reservoir as a Ramsar Site will bring the region into sharper focus nationally and globally. Fed primarily by rainwater and small adjoining streams, the reservoir fulfils the drinking water needs of local communities and stands as the principal source of irrigation. The surrounding land is exceptionally fertile, making the reservoir indispensable to the agricultural prosperity of numerous neighbouring villages and small towns.
A Haven of Exceptional Biodiversity
Kopra Reservoir and it’s surroundings remains a secure habitat for numerous species of birds, aquatic life, and plant varieties throughout the year. Particularly noteworthy is the large number of migratory birds recorded annually. The reservoir hosts abundant fish species, aquatic plants, amphibians, reptiles, and a variety of insects — making its biodiversity exceptionally rich and ecologically significant.
An Ideal Habitat for Rare Bird Species
According to the State Wetland Authority, the reservoir serves as an ideal conservation zone for rare and vital bird species such as the River Tern, Common Pochard, and Egyptian Vulture. Experts have noted that the site fulfils Ramsar Criteria 02, 03, and 05, establishing it as an exemplary wetland ecosystem worthy of international protection.
Tourism Potential Expected to Grow with Approval
In view of its ecological value, the State Government has forwarded the proposal for Ramsar recognition to the Centre. If approved, Kopra Reservoir will receive international-level protection, further enhancing its scientific, environmental, and tourism significance.
Strengthening Rural Livelihoods and Environmental Balance
Under various government initiatives, plans are underway to reinforce activities related to environmental conservation, water preservation, biodiversity enhancement, and rural livelihood development in the area. These efforts aim to safeguard natural resources while supporting the well-being of local communities, ensuring a sustainable balance between people and the ecosystem.
