Kolkata: At least 17 people were reported dead and dozens injured following a stampede-like situation at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The tragedy reportedly unfolded when a sudden crowd surge placed intense pressure on an exit route, with reports indicating that part of the exit structure collapsed. Injured visitors were rushed to Medical College, Kolkata, as authorities worked to establish the full extent of the casualties.

The incident transformed a community religious gathering into a major public safety emergency.

Photographs from the location showed footwear scattered outside the pandal, indicating the disorder that followed the crowd surge.

While initial reports expressed fears of several fatalities, subsequent media accounts placed the death toll at 17. The figure should be treated as reported rather than independently verified until confirmed by the authorities.

Rain and Heavy Crowds Triggered the Emergency

Police said the incident occurred at approximately 7.40 pm near the exit gate of the Sarada Park, also known as the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal, in the Girish Park police station area.

As rain began, people waiting outside reportedly rushed towards the pandal. Some lost their footing and fell, resulting in a dangerous crowd crush. Reports also described damage to an exit structure, although its precise role in the tragedy has not been conclusively established.

Death Toll Reported at 17, Official Confirmation Awaited

Reuters reported that at least 17 people had been killed, citing NDTV. Other reports, including accounts attributed to hospital sources, gave the same figure.

However, police had not publicly confirmed the death toll in the reports available at the time of this update. The distinction is important because the confirmed number of fatalities could differ from initial media accounts.

At Least 35 People Reportedly Taken to Hospital

Police initially reported that at least 25 people had been taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in serious condition. Later accounts placed the number of people injured or taken to hospital at approximately 35.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion, with several people losing consciousness. Some injured visitors were reportedly transported on motorcycles as efforts were made to get them medical attention.

Chief Minister Visits Hospital; Emergency Teams Deployed

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal and Health Minister Saradwat Mukherjee reached the hospital following the incident.

Police, fire services, disaster management personnel and medical teams were deployed, while the pandal was closed to visitors.

Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed sorrow over the tragedy and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Safety Arrangements Face Serious Questions

The tragedy has raised concerns about whether entry and exit arrangements were sufficient to accommodate large numbers of visitors.

An eyewitness reportedly complained that the entrance and exit passages were narrow and that lighting was inadequate.

These concerns require investigation. The available information does not yet establish whether structural failure, inadequate crowd management or a combination of factors caused the deaths and injuries.
