New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla says any fresh notice seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will be examined in accordance with established rules and procedures, amid Opposition protests over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Responding to a question at a press conference on Thursday, Birla outlined the procedural approach to any further move against the country’s top election official.
Fresh Notice to Face Procedural Examination
Birla said the examination of any fresh notice would follow the applicable parliamentary framework.
“If any fresh notice comes, we will see and examine it accordingly under rules and procedures,” he told reporters when asked about a possible impeachment motion against the CEC.
His response concerned the scrutiny of a potential fresh notice and did not announce its admission or any decision to initiate removal proceedings.
Earlier Notices Rejected, Second Attempt Pending
The Opposition has twice sought to initiate Kumar’s removal. Notices submitted during the first attempt were rejected in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, while those submitted during the second attempt remain pending in the Upper House.
Birla’s remarks come as Opposition parties continue to challenge Kumar’s handling of the electoral roll revision exercise.
Electoral Roll Revision at Centre of Protests
The political dispute centres on allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, with protesters seeking Kumar’s resignation.
The allegations remain the stated basis of the Opposition’s campaign; Birla’s remarks focused on how any fresh parliamentary notice would be examined.
