On Thursday February 13,2025 hours before PM Modi’s bilateral meeting with Trump at the White House, the US President announced retaliatory tariffs. Under this plan, the Trump administration will impose retaliatory tariffs of almost equal value on each foreign trade partner. During the interview, Trump reiterated his stance on the existing tariff structures between the US and its partners, including India.

Trump will not even listen to PM Modi!

President Trump said, “I told Prime Minister Modi yesterday (when he was here) ‘This is what we are going to do: equal retaliatory tariffs. Whatever tariff you levy, I will do the same.’ Trump said, “He (Modi) said, ‘No, no, I don’t like it.’ So I said, ‘No, no, whatever tariff you levy, I will do the same. I am doing the same with every country.'”

India imposes very stringent duties on some imports from the US, such as India imposes 100 percent duty on the automobile sector.

Musk also said this on tariffs

During the interview, Musk said, “It’s 100 percent – 100 percent duty on auto imports. Yes, it’s very high. And it’s the same on many other things. I said, ‘This is what we’re going to do: retaliatory duty. Whatever duty you charge, I’ll charge the same.'”

Trump said that under the retaliatory duty system, the US will impose the same level of duty on Indian imports as India imposes on American goods.
