The IMD has indicated that Cyclone Dana is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal by the early hours of October 24, 2024
“We plan to shift 10 lakh people to different cyclone shelters where all services will be made available. We hope that the evacuation would pick up by evening,” Suresh Pujari, Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, said following the Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday October 23, 2024.
The IMD has prohibited all marine activities, including fishing, in the Bay of Bengal until the cyclone has passed. “All fishermen returned to the coast by Tuesday October 22, 2024 evening,” said Pujari.
The Met warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy downpours in isolated places in the south Bengal districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts on October 24 and 25. “Heavy rainfall, wind and storm surge will reach the peak during the landfall time, which is between October 24 night and October 25 morning,” he added.
Eastern and South Eastern railways cancelled a large number of trains on October 24 and 25, in view of the cyclone.
With the cyclone approaching fast towards the state’s coast, several activities including the functioning of the Orissa High Court, Biju Patnaik International Airport, ports at Paradip and Dhamara, all educational institutions and others remain suspended in wake of the impending calamity.

Rain lashes parts of Bengal as cyclonic storm moves closer to coast
Several districts of West Bengal received moderate to heavy rain on Thursday (October 24, 2024) morning as severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ inched closer to the state’s coast and that of neighbouring Odisha, the IMD said.
The weather system lay 280 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 370 km southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal) at 2.30 a.m., the IMD said in a bulletin.
Advising fishermen not to venture into the sea, the Met Department said gale wind with speeds reaching 90-100 kmph and gusting to 110 kmph is prevailing over the northwest Bay of Bengal.
The bulletin warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy downpour in isolated places in the south Bengal districts of North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly districts on Thursday and Friday October 24 and 25.

Heavy rainfall in parts Jharkhand predicted; NDRF teams deployed
“Parts of Jharkhand could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from Thursday night under the influence of cyclonic storm Dana,” a Met Department official said.
“An ‘orange’ alert has been issued in the Kolhan region (West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharswan and East Singhbhum districts) for Friday,” he said.
“This category of alert indicates heavy rainfall ranging from 115 mm to 204 mm in 24 hours,” the official said.
“Apart from heavy rain, the region might also experience thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds of up to 60 kmph,” Ranchi Meteorological Centre in-charge Abhishek Anand said.

One million people to be moved out of Cyclone Dana’s path in Odisha
Odisha government has sped up the process of evacuating 10 lakh people to safer places as the severe cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall between Kendrapara and Bhadrak districts of Odisha during October 24-25.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi reviewed cyclone preparedness in the evening and directed senior officers to ensure the safety of vulnerable people and no loss of life in the disaster.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari urged people in areas vulnerable to cyclone to come to cyclone shelters as the government has taken responsibility to guard their properties left behind by them. Meanwhile, rain has started in coastal districts, with intensity increasing with every passing hour. The outer radius of a cyclonic storm has already touched the Odisha coast.

Odisha deploys 182 teams 2000 personnel for Cyclone Dana response
Stressing on the preparations for cyclonic storm Dana, Odisha Fire Services Director General Sudhanshu Sarangi said that they have 182 teams, which is nearly about 2000 people and they are fully geared up to deal with the cyclone.
“We are fully geared up for the cyclone. We have 182 teams of Fire and Rescue Services of Odisha, which is nearly about 2000 people. We will cover all the 14 districts that will be affected…we have 20 teams of NDRF…we also have 400 personnel of the State Disaster Force…we have mobilized some teams from the Forest Department,” he added.
Khorda Sub Divisional Magistrate Dipti Ranjan Sethi highlighted that all the blocks have been given evacuation plans and wherever there are hoardings in the town area, they have been removed and the officers in the area have also been called and the evacuation plan is ready.
“If needed, we will evacuate people; there are also arrangements for food and water for them. We are sure that we can deal with the cyclone,” SDM Sethi said.

West Bengal Raj Bhavan sets up task force
In view of the impending landfall of Cyclone Dana and its effects predicted from the midnight of October 23 to the morning of October 26, the West Bengal Raj Bhavan has set up a task force and control room to assist the public in this hour of need.
Governor Bose advised the people not to panic, to be resilient, and to follow the protocol and instructions of the competent authority and the State Government on how to face the cyclone.
The Governor expresses confidence that the resilient people of Bengal will face the crisis with resilience and fortitude.
