From classrooms and farms to hospitals, industries and public services, the State is building an AI ecosystem aimed at equipping its youth for a technology-driven future
As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms economies, workplaces and public services across the world, Chhattisgarh is preparing to make AI a significant part of its own development journey.
Under Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the State is seeking to move beyond simply adopting new technology. The larger objective is to connect artificial intelligence with employment, education, agriculture, healthcare, industry and governance while creating opportunities for young people to acquire skills needed for an increasingly technology-driven economy.
At the centre of this effort is the ₹500-crore Chief Minister’s AI Mission, conceived as a broad programme for building infrastructure, developing skills and expanding the practical application of artificial intelligence.
“We are fully committed to building a developed Chhattisgarh by effectively using AI in education, healthcare, agriculture and various areas of public service, while creating new opportunities for employment and innovation,” Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said.
₹500-Crore Mission Puts Skills at the Centre
The Chief Minister’s AI Mission envisages the establishment of 100 AI laboratories and five Centres of Excellence across the State.
Its scale, however, extends beyond physical infrastructure. Around six lakh students are proposed to be connected with AI learning and training, while approximately 1.5 lakh government officers and employees are expected to be familiarised with its use.
More than 50 government services are also proposed to be strengthened through AI-based applications.
For Chhattisgarh’s youth, the focus is particularly significant. Training in areas such as machine learning and data science is intended to prepare students not merely to compete for conventional jobs but also to innovate, develop solutions and potentially create employment themselves.
In a State where opportunities in advanced technology have traditionally been concentrated in larger cities outside Chhattisgarh, building such capabilities locally could help open a different career pathway for the next generation.
From the Farm to the Hospital
One of the strengths of artificial intelligence is its ability to process large quantities of information and identify patterns that may assist decision-making. Chhattisgarh’s proposed applications therefore extend far beyond the conventional IT sector.
In agriculture, analysis of weather, crop, pest and disease information could help provide farmers with more timely and precise advice.
Healthcare offers another area of potential application. AI-assisted systems can support diagnostics, disease identification and management of healthcare resources, particularly as digital infrastructure expands.
The challenge will be to ensure that technology strengthens human decision-making rather than becoming an end in itself. For a geographically diverse State with substantial rural and tribal populations, the real measure of technological progress will ultimately be whether its benefits reach people beyond major urban centres.
AI Enters Governance and Industry
Artificial intelligence is also being viewed as a tool for improving the delivery and monitoring of public services.
Expansion of digital government platforms, including Seva Setu, along with AI-enabled systems could make monitoring of schemes more efficient and help citizens access services more conveniently.
Industry presents another important opportunity. Robotics, machine learning and AI-enabled sensors are increasingly capable of supporting production, monitoring machinery, identifying potential failures and improving energy efficiency.
Predictive systems can alert operators before equipment develops serious faults, potentially reducing downtime and costs. AI-powered tools can also help businesses understand customer requirements and provide round-the-clock digital assistance.
For an industrial State such as Chhattisgarh, the intersection of artificial intelligence with manufacturing, mining and energy could therefore become particularly important.
Nava Raipur Emerging as the Technology Hub
A substantial part of this technology push is centred on Nava Raipur Atal Nagar, which is being positioned as an emerging hub for IT, artificial intelligence and data infrastructure.
The plans outlined for the city include AI-linked data-centre and Special Economic Zone development involving investment of approximately ₹1,000 crore.
A National Skill Training Institute, envisaged at an investment of around ₹200 crore, is also part of the broader effort to strengthen the region’s skilled workforce.
Academic institutions are expected to play an equally important role. AI Centres of Excellence associated with NIT Raipur and IIIT-NR are intended to encourage research and startup activity in areas including mining, steel, healthcare, agriculture and smart governance.
This combination of educational institutions, research facilities, startups, data infrastructure and industry could help create an ecosystem in which young people are able to study emerging technologies and find opportunities to apply those skills within Chhattisgarh.
Building an AI-Based Data Centre
Another ambitious component of the technology roadmap is an AI-based data centre being developed over 13.5 acres in Sector 22 of Nava Raipur Atal Nagar, described in the supplied material as the country’s first AI-based data centre.
The project is expected to strengthen the State’s digital infrastructure while supporting the growing requirements of artificial intelligence and data-driven services.
Its significance for Chhattisgarh could extend beyond the technology sector. Stronger digital infrastructure can support education, healthcare, agriculture and government services, including their delivery to people living in remote areas.
For young people, the longer-term aspiration is equally clear: creating sufficiently advanced opportunities within Chhattisgarh so that pursuing a career in emerging technology does not necessarily require migration to one of India’s established technology centres.
Technology Must Ultimately Work for People
The scale of the AI Mission reflects an important change in the way technology is being viewed in Chhattisgarh. Artificial intelligence is no longer being treated simply as a specialised subject for engineers and IT professionals; it is increasingly being positioned as an enabling technology cutting across sectors.
Yet infrastructure alone will not determine its success. AI laboratories must produce learning, training must translate into employable skills, research centres must encourage innovation, and digital government systems must make services genuinely easier for citizens.
The opportunity before Chhattisgarh is therefore not simply to use AI, but to build the skills and institutions that enable people to participate in the technological transformation themselves.
If that connection between technology, talent and opportunity is sustained, the ₹500-crore mission could become an important part of the State’s effort to prepare its young people — and its economy — for the future.
