Aichi-Nagoya, Japan: Indian teenager Kumkum Mohod scripted a landmark moment for Indian archery on Saturday by winning the women’s individual recurve gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games, overcoming South Korea’s Oh Yejin in a tense shoot-off.

The 17-year-old held her nerve after the contest was tied 5-5. Oh registered an 8 with her shoot-off arrow, leaving Mohod needing a nine or better. The Indian responded with a perfect 10 to seal the gold.e

The triumph made Mohod the first Indian woman to win a medal in the individual recurve event at the Asian Games, turning that maiden medal into gold.

Her route to the title was equally impressive. Mohod defeated China’s Jingyi Zhu 6-2 in the semi-final, after having earlier overcome world champion Kang Chaeyoung.

Reaching the gold-medal contest also earned one of the available women’s individual recurve quota places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Under qualification rules, the quota belongs to India rather than to the individual athlete.

The individual triumph completed a remarkable Asian Games campaign for Mohod. She had already joined Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma to win India’s maiden women’s recurve team gold and partnered Dhiraj Bommadevara for silver in the mixed recurve team event.

She therefore leaves the Games with three medals — two gold and one silver — and one of Indian archery’s most significant individual Asian Games achievements.
