Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday August 15, 2026 called upon all 140 crore Indians to recognise their responsibility towards the nation and contribute in their respective fields, saying the freedom secured through generations of struggle and sacrifice must be protected and strengthened through collective effort.

Addressing the 80th Independence Day celebrations at Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow on August 15, 2026, Adityanath said India’s Independence was not the achievement of any particular section or community, but the outcome of a long national struggle in which countless people made sacrifices.

“All 140 crore people of India must collectively contribute equally in their respective fields to advance this effort,” Adityanath said, placing citizens’ duties and national responsibility at the centre of his Independence Day message.

The Chief Minister said the freedom achieved in 1947 had come after a prolonged struggle marked by sacrifice, dedication and the martyrdom of freedom fighters. India, he said, had repeatedly resisted what he described as a mentality of slavery despite internal conflicts and conspiracies.

Freedom Must Reach Every Citizen

Giving a wider meaning to Independence, Adityanath said political freedom alone could not represent the complete idea of liberty. Freedom must also translate into people’s everyday lives through liberation from poverty, illiteracy, inequality and discrimination.

He said the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters should inspire the present generation not merely to celebrate Independence Day but to understand the responsibilities that accompany freedom.

The Chief Minister’s message placed national development alongside patriotism, arguing that citizens fulfilling their responsibilities in their own fields can collectively strengthen the country.

He highlighted India’s progress in poverty alleviation, referring to the lifting of around 25 crore people out of multidimensional poverty, while speaking about the expansion of education, welfare and governance.

Youth and Employment in Focus

Young people also figured prominently in Adityanath’s Independence Day address.

The Chief Minister announced a new Youth Brigade Scheme, saying the Uttar Pradesh government intended to provide greater support to young people in employment and entrepreneurship.

“I wish to announce that the Uttar Pradesh government is launching a new initiative, the ‘Youth Brigade Scheme’, to provide significant support to our youth in the realms of employment and business,” Adityanath said.

The announcement added an economic dimension to his broader call for citizens to contribute to nation-building. His message to young Indians was that participation in India’s development should extend beyond seeking opportunities to creating them.

Independence as Responsibility

A recurring theme of Adityanath’s address was that the preservation of freedom cannot be left solely to governments, security forces or any particular institution.

His appeal to 140 crore Indians sought to connect individual responsibility with the larger national interest — whether through education, employment, entrepreneurship, public service or other professions.

In that sense, his Independence Day message went beyond remembrance of the past. It presented freedom as a continuing responsibility: one generation won it through sacrifice, while subsequent generations have the duty to preserve it and use it to build a stronger and more equitable country.
