Accident on Rishikesh-Badrinath Highway: Tempo-Traveller fell into the river, 17 people of the same family were on board, two died, many missing

A tempo-traveller met with an accident and fell into a river near the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway. There were 19 people in the vehicle including the driver.
A major road accident took place near Gholthir on the Rishikesh-Badrinath Highway in Rudraprayag district on Thursday June 26, 2025 morning. A tempo-traveller carrying passengers going for Badrinath Darshan went out of control and fell straight into the Alaknanda river. There were 19 people in the vehicle including the driver. 17 people belonged to one family. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is also reported to have reached the spot.
On receiving information about the accident, teams of police, SDRF and district administration reached the spot and rescue operation was started. 17 people of a family from Udaipur, Rajasthan had left for Chardham Yatra in this vehicle. Who had left for Badrinath Darshan this morning after Kedarnath Darshan. District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said that so far nine people have been rescued, out of which two have died. A woman is also among the dead. Eight injured have been sent to the district hospital. Many small children are also among the injured.
Three people were thrown out of the vehicle
According to eyewitnesses, three people were thrown out of the vehicle at the time of the accident, who have been admitted to the hospital in critical condition. The other passengers of the vehicle were swept away in the strong strom of the river. One dead body from the spot reached Shivpuri, which was rescued and taken out.
SDRF, police and local administration teams have intensified the search operation in the Alaknanda river, but due to the strong current and inaccessible site, relief work is facing a lot of difficulties. There is an atmosphere of mourning and panic in the entire area due to the incident. The causes of the accident are being investigated. There is a stir in the entire area after the accident. The cause of the accident is not yet known.
CM Dhami expressed deep grief
Chief Minister Dhami said that the news of a tempo traveler falling into the river in Rudraprayag district is very sad. Relief and rescue work is being done on a war footing by SDRF and other rescue teams. I am constantly in touch with the local administration in this regard. I pray to God for everyone’s safety.
