US President Donald Trump has taken a big decision. He has fulfilled his promise of closing the Ministry of Education during the presidential election. On Thursday March 21 , 2025 , he signed an order related to same . Under this, the Ministry of Education is now to be abolished at the federal level.

This decision of Trump is being discussed all over the world. Actually, the education system in America is considered to be of the best level in the world. In such a situation, many questions have started arising regarding this decision of Trump. For example, how will the education system of America run after the decision to close the Ministry of Education? What will be the impact of this decision on educational institutions in the country? How will their expenses be met? What will happen to the students and their parents? Let’s know…

First know- what is the education ministry of America, what does it do?
The education ministry in America was established in 1979 by the then President Jimmy Carter. Its purpose was to monitor educational policies at the central level along with different states in America and to provide financial help to schools.

The way of running the education system in America is quite different from India or other countries. In America, the maximum burden of education does not lie with the central or federal government, but on the state and district administration. That is, in America, the job of the education ministry is not to run government schools and determine their curriculum, this responsibility primarily lies with the administration of states and districts.

The federal education ministry is associated with very important programs related to the funding of government and some private schools. Especially in the matter of providing funds for the education of handicapped students and students from weaker sections.
The education ministry is also responsible for implementing civil rights in the whole of America. The central government also releases funds in this regard so that discrimination on the basis of race and gender can be stopped in schools.

Not only this, the Ministry of Education also works to collect data of American schools and solve the problems arising in the education system.

So can the Ministry of Education be closed only on the order of the President?

Donald Trump has given the order to abolish the Ministry of Education, but this task is not going to be that easy. Actually, in America, the President has the right to appoint and remove ministers, but the responsibility of setting up ministries, their funding and other things lies with the US Parliament. In such a situation, Trump will also need the approval of the Parliament to abolish the Ministry of Education.

Trump will need the support of a supermajority i.e. 60 out of 100 MPs in the upper house of the US Parliament. Talking about the latest figures, Trump’s Republican Party has a majority in the Senate after the election. Currently, the Republican Party has 53 MPs and the Democratic Party has 47 MPs in the Senate. In this regard, Trump will need the support of 7 MPs of the Democratic Party to abolish the Ministry of Education, which may prove to be a distant dream.

Not only this, Trump will also face difficulty in gathering the necessary support to abolish the Ministry of Education in the lower house of the US Parliament – the House of Representatives. Last year, when an amendment was brought in another bill to abolish the Ministry of Education, 60 MPs from the Republican Party and the entire Democratic Party voted against it.

Donald Trump: Another order from Trump, now the Federal Education Department is closed; A big deal is also made with Ukraine regarding minerals

Despite this, Donald Trump has gone ahead with his decision to abolish the Ministry of Education. He has ordered Education Minister Linda McMahon to start working to abolish this agency and transfer all the responsibilities (funding arrangements) of the Union to the states and district administrations.

It is not clear in Trump’s order what will happen to its programs after the abolition of the Federal Education Ministry or whether its employees will be sent to any other ministry or not. Apart from this, it is also not clear what the Federal Government will do in future on the issue of financial aid and loans used by students. There is also no time limit given in Trump’s order to completely abolish the Ministry of Education. It is believed that this decision of the President can be challenged in the American courts.
If the Ministry of Education is abolished, what will be the effect on students and parents?
By abolishing the Ministry of Education, financial aid to hundreds of schools will end. This is likely to affect teachers and students equally. Especially schools that promote disabled students and maintain racial-gender diversity will be most affected by this decision.

Why do Trump and the Republican Party want to abolish the Ministry of Education?

The Republican Party has been against the Ministry of Education since its inception. Ronald Reagan, who emerged as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate during the era of Democratic President Jimmy Carter, had talked about abolishing the Ministry of Education during his election campaign in 1980. Actually, the Republican Party argues that it is against the centralization of education and it should be handed over to the states and local administrations, which can take all decisions related to education according to their needs and population structure.

The Republican Party had also opposed the Central Education Ministry under the leadership of Donald Trump. The party accused the ministry of promoting woke or liberal political ideology among children in the name of protecting civil rights. It also opposed this ideology on gender and racial issues.

During his campaign, Trump had said that instead of giving financial aid to schools to prevent racial discrimination, he would resort to cases related to civil rights. He has termed the aid given in return as increasing racism. Not only this, the Trump administration has started investigation against many colleges on the alleged charges of racism.
