Amaravati: Female Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) are allegedly targeting Indian defence personnel through social media and other communication channels in attempts to obtain sensitive and classified information, the Andhra Pradesh Police have said.
The warning came from the Andhra Pradesh Counter Intelligence (CI) Cell, which on Tuesday disclosed the arrest of two persons, including a naval staffer, for allegedly spying for Pakistan.
According to police, intelligence operatives are attempting to cultivate relationships with defence personnel through a combination of financial inducements, honey traps, sexually explicit material and false promises.
Investigators believe such approaches are designed to gradually gain the confidence of the targeted individuals before seeking information that could have security implications.
Police said the alleged operatives may initially establish apparently harmless online contact before attempting to build a personal relationship. The interaction can subsequently be used to persuade, induce or pressure individuals into providing information.
The Counter Intelligence Cell’s disclosure underscores the increasing role of digital communication platforms in espionage attempts, where an individual may be approached without initially knowing the true identity or affiliation of the person communicating with them.
Two Arrested in Espionage Case
The Andhra Pradesh CI Cell said it had arrested two persons, including a naval staffer, in connection with an alleged espionage operation.
Police allege that the suspects were involved in passing information to Pakistani intelligence operatives.
The information supplied in the material available for this report does not identify the two arrested persons or provide details about the specific classified material allegedly compromised.
The allegations against the accused will remain subject to investigation and subsequent judicial proceedings.
Honey Traps and Financial Inducements
According to the police, female operatives linked to Pakistani intelligence have allegedly attempted to lure defence personnel through carefully developed online relationships.
The methods cited by investigators include offers of money, romantic or sexual inducements, sharing obscene photographs and making promises intended to win the confidence of the target.
Such communication can become particularly dangerous when the target has access to information relating to military establishments, personnel, deployments or other restricted matters.
The police disclosure therefore places particular emphasis on caution while interacting with unknown individuals online and on preventing unauthorised disclosure of information connected with defence establishments.
Digital Contact Emerging as Security Concern
The case also highlights the challenge faced by counter-intelligence agencies as traditional espionage methods increasingly intersect with smartphones, messaging applications and social-media platforms.
An approach no longer necessarily requires physical contact. A relationship can be initiated remotely, developed over time and allegedly exploited to obtain information or compromise the targeted person.
The Andhra Pradesh Counter Intelligence Cell’s warning is aimed particularly at personnel working in sensitive establishments, where even seemingly routine information could potentially be combined with other material for intelligence purposes.
Further investigation into the two arrests is expected to examine the nature of the alleged communication, the identities of those operating from across the border and the extent, if any, of information shared.
