New Delhi: NDA candidate and former Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan took oath as the 15th Vice President on Friday. He easily defeated his rival India Block candidate and former Supreme Court Justice B Sudarshan Reddy. Radhakrishnan got 452 votes out of a total of 767 votes, while Reddy got 300 votes. This figure shows the rift in the opposition camp due to cross-voting by some opposition MPs.

The voting figures clearly show that there was a lot of cross-voting by opposition MPs. However, the numbers were in favour of Radhakrishnan even before the election.

The Vice Presidential election came into existence after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21. He had suddenly resigned citing health reasons. After Radhakrishnan was elected Vice President, he resigned from the post of Governor of Maharashtra on Thursday.
