In his address at the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Modi stressed the need for united fight against global terrorism and said that international cooperation and concrete steps are essential to counter such attacks

At the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of terrorism seriously and called the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 an attack on the entire humanity. He said that terrorism is one of the most serious challenges facing humanity. Recently, India had to face an inhuman and cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam. This attack was not only on India, but on the entire humanity.

In the session on ‘Peace, Security and Improvement in Global Governance’ of the BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s commitment to peace and brotherhood. He also made a strong appeal for united global action against terrorism. He clearly said that any country that directly or indirectly supports terrorism should pay the price. There should be no hesitation in banning terrorists. The victims of terrorism and its supporters cannot be weighed on the same scale.

Prime Minister Modi also stressed that silently supporting or ignoring terrorism for political or personal interests should not be acceptable under any circumstances. He said that India will continue to choose the path of peace under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi and Gautam Buddha. No matter how difficult the situation is, no matter how humane it is, peace is the best path for the welfare of humanity.

Advocating proper representation to the Global South

PM Modi, while demanding comprehensive reforms in global governance institutions at the BRICS summit, also advocated proper representation to the ‘Global South’ i.e. developing countries. He said that a double policy is adopted with these countries on global issues of development and security, which makes the global systems unbalanced.

BRICS countries condemn Pahalgam attack

BRICS countries jointly condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack in strong words. In their joint statement, they termed it a criminal and unforgivable act of terrorism and reiterated their commitment to fight together against all forms of terrorism. The statement said that we strongly condemn the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025, in which 26 people were killed and many were injured.

Hold the supporters of terrorists accountable

The statement also said that terrorists and their supporters should be held accountable regardless of their motive. The BRICS countries called for the early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism under the United Nations. The BRICS leaders reiterated that terrorism should not have any connection with any religion, caste or race. They appealed for concrete international action against all terrorists and terrorist organisations declared by the United Nations.
