What is Bluesky and Why Are Millions Leaving Elon Musk’s X for It?

Social media platform, Bluesky, considered as rival of Elon Musk’s X, have seen an influx of new users since the US presidential election results.

More than 1 million new users have joined the Bluesky following Donald Trump’s presidential victory.

 According to reports, one of the reason behind many users joining the Bluesky is because of Elon Musk’s involvement in US elections. Musk officially endorsed Donald Trump for the elections and is closely tied to US president-elect Trump’s election campaign. Also Read – TikTok parent ByteDan

The Other reason for the influx is X’s announcement of allowing users to view posts from people who had blocked them, which helped Bluesky pick 1.2 million new users. The company reported picking up 3 million new users in the week after X was suspended in Brazil in September, reported Guardian.
 

The company said that the influx of new users has helped them to reach more than 15 million users worldwide, increase from 9 million in September. The recent influx were largely from North America and United Kingdom.

 What is Bluesky?

 Bluesky is a social media platform that look a lot like Elon Musk’s X (formerly twitter). You can do the same things that you do on X such as posting, messaging and replying. Who owns Bluesky?

Bluesky is decentralized social network and it was funded by Twitter. It was announced by then CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey in 2019. Bluesky was launched as an independent company in 2021 and was opened to public in beta stage in 2023. It is run and owned by chief executive Jay Graber.
 
How is it different from X?

 Bluesky users can create their own servers on which they can store data, other than those owned by the company and also they can set their own rules.

Users can also block others unlike X, where users can view posts from people who had blocked them.

 Although Bluesky has 14.5 million users but it’s way behind Eln Musk’s X, which reported in March that 250 million people use the social media platform everyday.
